One of the most well-known Native American princesses is Pocahontas, whose life story continues to fascinate us almost 4 centuries since her death.  This Virginian Indian princess is also the main source of inspiration for many an American Indian girl costume and for good reasons, too.

Your little girl will feel like a princess in her Halloween costume even if it is only for a day and a night.  Now, that is sufficient reason to buy the American Indian costume for your own sweet princess in the family.

Colors and Accents

Most American Indian costumes for girls are made of light brown to medium brown cloth, which is to be expected since earth colors were preferred by the Native Americans.  Keep in mind that the most common aspect of all the American Indian tribes despite their differences in culture was respect for nature.

This goal of living in harmony with nature also manifested itself through their clothing choices.  The colors of the clothes reflected the colors of the Earth starting from the soil itself to the colors of the sky.  Thus, the clothes were brown for the soil while the accents were in blues, yellows and reds.

You can also find American Indian costumes for girls with colors like blue and yellow, too, while the accents are in brown.  These are acceptable variations that your little girl will also love.

Fringes and Beads

You will also notice that Pocahontas usually wore clothes that have fringes at the hems, which was a style popular among many Native American tribes then and now.  Well, the American Indian costumes also sport fringes for added authenticity, said fringes made either from the same cloth as the dress or from other materials most notably synthetic leather.

To add yet another layer of authenticity to the costume, you should layer one or two beads done in the Native American style.  You can usually find these beads in online stores although you may also make one of your own beads with a do-it-yourself tutorial as guide.  Just look at pictures of Native American beadwork to get inspirations on the proper way to make these beads.

Shoes and Headgear

And of course, don’t forget the moccasins and sandals as well as the headgear to complete the American Indian princess look.  You can let your child use any of her strap sandals in her shoe collection or you can buy new moccasins.  The most important thing is that your child is actually comfortable in her shoes.

In keeping with her princess look, a crown of sorts is also necessary.  Since tiaras are out of place in an American Indian princess’ head, a headband with a single colored feather is a very good idea.  You can usually purchase this headband as part of a set or as a separate component of the costume.  Also, if you want a warrior princess going trick-a-treating, then add a toy tomahawk to the whole get-up.  Or maybe a bow and arrow just like the boys.

Truly, your little girl will love her American Indian girl costume so much that she may not want to take it off.  Well, if you are an exotic American Indian princess for a day, you definitely will not want your day to end, too.
